SHAWN CONNOLLY: Once you've mastered the stationary ollie, now you're ready to take your ollie to rolling around. Basically, one of the things that's changed is you're headed in a direction while you're rolling. So this means some of the balance that's required is going to change just slightly. You're going to notice that you may need to lean a little more forward or a little more back to get the same results that you got from just stationary ollie. So when you're rolling, remember, your weight and everything is headed in a forward position. So one thing you want to get ready for is falling of course. Now that you're rolling, you're going at a certain speed, so you're going to want to keep in mind that you may miss the ollie and you may slam, so you'll get ready with your momentum to roll forward. The other thing that you're going to have to remember is that since your ollie is now arcing forward and it's traveling over a distance instead of going straight up, it's now rolling across and apart. The only way I can explain that to you is to practice as much as possible. The more you get the feeling down, the better equipped you'll be for when it's--when you're actually doing it. So now that you've got the straight ollie stationary, you're ready to bring it and arc it and ride and have it travel some distance. And the more you get better at that, the faster you'll be to get your ollies and eventually the higher you'll be able to get your ollies. Now, you're going to want to try to get your ollie a little bit higher. Now, what you're going to want to do to get higher is basically remember that ollying is a form of jumping. So when you start out, you're going to want to start out with smaller-sized things, just test out how it feels. Snap the ollie and try to get you and your board up there. You may not roll away at first, but this will get you used to you snapping the ollie, the timing that's required, and getting your board and your body on to the top of the surface. So now that you've mastered some of the basic ollie variations, you may be ready to bring your ollie down some gaps and be able to ollie off stuff and drop. Basically, when you're dealing with dropping, you always want to remember to not jump off anything too big to start out, so pick something smaller and get that mastered and then slowly get down higher and higher gaps as you go all along and you're comfortable with. Your foot placement is going to be adjusted by dropping now more than rising and dropping. So you'll probably going to end up putting your foot a little further forward than you normally do. Or this is because when you snap the ollie, it's going to arc a little bit lower than normal, so you're going to want to remember that. Now, you're ready to ollie down.
