TIM BORLAND: Hi, my name is Tim Borland and today we are going to talk about how to sprint. Now there's several keys in sprinting. It is different than jogging. You're movement pattern is going to be more, we call it ballistic. Things to remember in sprinting is going to be control. Try not to trash in your arms movements, in your leg movements. Sometimes, it's good to start off jogging and then to slowly pick it up, so that you're in control. Some things to think about are arm swings. You really want to pump your arms. You want to drive your arms front to back. You almost want to think that there's a drum down at your side and you're trying to beat that drum. Your hands would be open. You're going to beat that drum as you come down full arms. And this creates a propulsion that's actually going to help move you through space in addition to your strides and your steps. And so--and with that, we want to think about foot placement. It's going to be key. You're going to want to make sure that you're pushing off the balls of your feet. You're thinking of a spring when you're sprinting and it's a drive forward. If you were to watch a sprinter, oftentimes, you would see them sticking their chest out, leaning forward; their heads are going to be forward. You're in a leaning forward, driving motion, driving your arms. You want to think about your knees as we kind of go from arms down. Think about you knees. You want to bring your knees up. You want to have high knees when you're sprinting. And then down to your feet on the other end. As you're kicking through, the faster your rotation on your leg, from knee to foot, the quicker you'll be able to propel yourself. So you also want to get a high kick on the back, oftentimes, that will--it will be like kicking yourself in the butt, as you kick up with your heels. So again, the points to remember, really, are using your arms to propel yourself, keeping your knees high, keeping your heels high on the back end. As you step, make sure you're pushing out on the front of your foot and you're leaning forward, and just in that driving motion, your head's going to be out in front and you're really just going to be focused on what's in front of you. Nothing around you and all of your driving motion should be front to back. You want to avoid swinging side to side and different things like that. So, how to sprint, try it out. I think a good recommendation would be start jogging and slowly pick up your pace. As you feel comfortable, move a little bit faster and a little bit faster, and I think this might help you move in a way that will be a bit more controlled.
