TIM BORLAND: Hi, my name's Tim Borland and today we are going to talk about how to trail run. Now trails can be a lot of fun. They are different than running on a road, of course. But you experience a lot more in the trails. It can be a lot more scenic. They do provide--they do have more challenges in them. In trail running, you are going to find a lot of different surfaces. You are going to have single track, technical, hills, routes, rocks, holes. You're going to have more open fire roads. It will be obviously less technical. Some--in some ways, it will be more enjoyable. It depends on what your flavor is, what you're looking for. Trails can be really difficult too in just how hilly they are. You can find thousands of--feet of elevation change on trails. But then we talk about surfaces too. And the surface on a trails can be a lot more friendly too because we are running on dirt as opposed to asphalt, which is a bit more firm. And then concrete, which is really firm, which you definitely want to stay away from concrete. On trails, some things to think about are just--maybe your footing, you might want to get some trail shoes because they do provide more support, more protection and even some more comfort as you're running on the road. It keeps you from slipping. And they help from keeping you--from rolling your ankles. You want to be a little bit more visual as you're running on trails, focusing on the ground in front of you more than up and enjoying the scenery, which is always good to do. But you want to be more focused on the ground because, again, there can be things that you don't notice that--I've tripped several times and you don't want to do that. So keep your eyes focused on the ground as you run. And get out and explore the trails. It's really a good way to change up your training. It can be a good way after hitting the treadmill or the same road everyday or the track. It can be really refreshing, a good long run on a trail on a weekend with a buddy. You might need some different things. Remember, when you're on a trail, you're not going to find gas stations or bathrooms or different things. So bring a camelback, something, extra source of water. You might want to bring a phone, bring a friend so you've got somebody that you're with. Just some different precautions that you want to take and think about as you're attacking the trail, but definitely, do it. Trail run is a lot fun. I encourage you to do it.
