Todd is the head coach for the University of Central Florida's women's volleyball team. Prior to that he coached as USC where they competed in the division one final four. He has also been a part of the coaching delegation for the USA women's team in the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. He was an assistant at Michigan University early in his career and simply loves the sport and coaching it where ever he is.
TODD DAGENAIS: Uh-oh. That is a lift, and that is a point for the other team. We are going to go in this segment and talk a little bit about the rules of volleyball. Well, a lift is one of the things that you can't do. The weird thing about volleyball is it is the one sport that you can never catch, hold or throw the ball. If you do, it is a point for the other team. Basic rules of volleyball. Sets, which are games, sets are the 25 points. Rally scoring which means you do not need to be serving the ball in order to score a point. You are allowed three contacts on your own side of the net before you have to send it over to your opponents. The nice thing about volleyball is your opponents is on the other side and you are on this side. That was one of the reasons why volleyball was created, to stop the roughness from the sport of basketball. Volleyball, as it is today, has six players on a floor. Six players, you have three in the front row and three in the back row. Only the front row players are allowed to jump and attack the ball over the height of the net. The back row players have to stay in the back row, and they are in charge of passing and defending the court when the opponents are attacking. We have specialization now in this game. It used to be that everybody would just rotate around and play the position that they happen to be in. But today, you have left-side hitters whose jobs are to attack from the left-side front of the net. You have middle hitters whose jobs are to attack from the middle of the court but also to serve as a blocking person. You have right-front attackers that can attack just like an outside hitter. And then, of course, you have all your back-row players. Their job is defend the perimeter of the back row against the opponent's attack. Now, let us talk a little bit about some of the faults in volleyball. You just saw me commit one of them, a hold. You are not allowed to hold the ball. Secondly, you are never allowed to touch the net. If you touch the net, that is an automatic point for the team. The last thing that you are really not allowed to do, you are not allowed to double-contact the ball, just like that. Uh-oh. That is another fault, another point for the team. Learn the rules of volleyball and you'll be an expert.
