TODD DAGENAIS: One of the biggest questions I get as a head volleyball coach is how do I get recruited to play college volleyball? That is a great question. There are so many different ways to do it. But the nice thing about playing college volleyball is you might be able to get a scholarship, a full ride to attend school for free. Actually, it's not free. You are going to have a lot of hard work in those four or five years. But this is how you do it. First, you have to make sure that the coach of the school that you are interested in knows that you exist. You do that a couple of different ways. First, treat it like a business, treat it like you are just trying to get a job. Put together a volleyball resume with your height, some of your physical characteristics like your jump, your approach jump, your block jump numbers, maybe some speed numbers, but put that on a resume and send that to a coach along with a letter of interest. One of the best ways for me, as a coach, to get to see you play is if you put a bunch of skills - there are six skills in volleyball - take about five or six reps of each of those skills, put it on a video tape or a DVD along with a game or two of uninterrupted footage, put that on a DVD, send that off to me along with your letter of interest. From there, what you are trying to do is you are trying to get me out to see you play. You send me the DVD; I look at your resume. I look at your DVD and say, "Hey, I need to get out and see this kid play in high school or I need to see this kid play in club." That's your goal. You are trying to get me out there to see you play. From there, we look at 200, 300 or more kids every year for just a few scholarships. We are going to go out. We are going to figure out what kind of kid fits our program the best. But the best thing that you can do in the meantime is get out and see as many college matches as you can because seeing different levels of volleyball is going to allow you to get an idea where you might fit into a school's recruiting plans. Mind you, there are all kinds of different levels of volleyball: Division I, II, III, NAIA and junior college. Each of them have great programs with terrific coaches out there that can help you make the very best that you can be.
