ROBERT LINDE: Acupuncture can be very effective for various types of back pain. It is very well-known for a lot of different types of low back pain ailments, anything from sciatic pain to a pulled muscle, to even things that are more severe such as disk issues. So, ask your acupuncturist if it is something that they can help. And interestingly enough, they may use a number of different modalities, anything from acupuncture. They may add electro stimulation to the points and they are likely to do some things like massage and cupping, maybe even moxibustion as well as give you some exercises. So not only will they do some local points, but some of the most powerful points for low back pain are actually in the legs and there's a few points in the hands as well, just depending on what your diagnosis is from a Chinese perspective. So we can utilize a couple of these acupuncture needles in the back. In these points I am actually going to use on him cannot only be helpful in alleviating some back pain, but it also is effective in strengthening the back to prevent further injuries in the future, which is ultimately our goal as to prevent illness as well as take care of acute problems. We say that the kidneys, the energetic kidneys actually help to control the low back. So a lot of times when we start to treat low back issues, especially if it is dull and achy, we try to strengthen the kidneys on an individual. We may use herbs or acupuncture or both with that as well. So these are actually kidney points here, just behind the highest point of the ankle and cannot only help with treating the pain, but it can also help to strengthen the back as well. And it is helpful sometimes to get additional care from things like physical therapists and chiropractors to all work as a team in order to help fix any problems that you may be having with your low back or any other part of your back.
