ROBERT LINDE: Acupuncture in Chinese medicine, is actually very effective for treating a variety of different types of addictions. Smoking is probably one of the most common addictions we see in our clinics. And so there is a specific protocol that we often use a starting point for dealing with these addictions. It is called the NADA protocol and it involves five points, very specific in the ear. And sometimes we add some additional points on the ear or sometimes actually on the side of the arm. And then there is oftentimes side effects that we will see that maybe a result of the smoking. So, oftentimes we use needles but at the end of the treatment we will oftentimes send the patient out with something called an ear seed which is actually just a small piece of tape with a very small seed on it. And we can place this in the ears, in the same place that we would have put acupuncture points or acupuncture needles and it allows that treatment to really go home with the patient when they need it the most, when they are really starting to get those cravings. So we are going to do Shenmen, kidney, the sympathetic nervous system, the liver and the lung. And what I like to tell people to do is as they are trying to deal with the addictions, and cigarette addictions are one of the more difficult ones to get rid of, is to utilize all of the different modalities that maybe available to them. Sometimes, they can use hypnosis. They may want to try things like massage. And then just some good things like setting a stop date, drinking lots of water and start a gentle exercise regiment whenever they are feeling those cravings. All of these things together can really help you get rid off a really bad addiction.
