PATTY BURROWS: How to teach your child shapes. Children, by nature, are very inquisitive and there are many shapes and sizes and colors in their environment. So the easiest thing to do is to use what's already available to teach shapes. You can teach shapes by pointing out shapes everywhere you are. You can have cards that have shapes on them. You can match shapes. These are bean bags with shapes. Make sure that whenever you show a child a shape, you tell them the name of the shape as well. Here are some little cute lights that light up, and these are shapes. You may also have a magnetic board where you have shapes. Point out shapes in a child's world. For instance, when you're at the mall, have the child look for everything that's round or have the child look for things that are triangle. Our foods have shapes. You can use different shapes and different foods in order to teach your child about shapes. Remember, your child's environment is full of shapes. Choose the shapes in your child's environment.
