LATORRE: Anytime a patient has a cervical or a neck problem and they are considering a chiropractic physician for treatment, they should first make certain that the chiropractor is extremely qualified. A chiropractic orthopedist or a neurologist would be better than a general chiropractor for certain. And then when you visit the chiropractor's office, you want to make sure that it is a comfortable and clean setting with the staff as polished in doing everything that they should to make you comfortable. In addition, the chiropractor should also take a thorough and detailed case history, a prior medical history, and your symptoms as they currently express themselves. Once that is done, then you want to make certain that the doctor does a complete examination to include chiropractic, orthopedic, and neurological testing along with range of motion and muscle strength testing. Once that is completed, a complete set of x-rays to the cervical spine or neck area should be done. You would not build a house without a set of blueprints and you would not treat someone's spine without an x-ray. Once that is done, then the chiropractor should gently and always gently proceed with the treatment. That treatment should never be painful and it should never take any longer than maybe two or three minutes to adjust the cervical spine. The chiropractic treatment is called an adjustment and it should, as I said, always be very gentle.
