LATORRE: The purest form of chiropractic deals with the neuromusculoskeletal system which is a mechanical system just like any other mechanical system, and when you adjust any mechanical system it is called just that, an adjustment. So, when the shoulder joint or an elbow joint or a wrist is misaligned, the chiropractor then has to do a very thorough history, a prior medical history, and a good range of motion as well as an orthopedic and neurological examination of the joint to be treated. Once he understands the nature or the derangement of the condition, he then proceeds to adjust in such a manner that it is a mechanical treatment. If it is a shoulder, the elbow is tucked in and it is very gently set so that it does not necessarily hurt the patient. Though you may feel a sharp sting because of the nerve endings and the misalignment, the sting should go away pretty quickly, and that really concludes the adjustment of the shoulder, elbow, or wrist. The same thing occurs with the hip, knee, or ankle and that is considered extremity adjustment. An arm or a leg is an extremity. The treatment is called an adjustment and so it is very simply done and is very carefully done.
