DR. WILLIAM A. LATORRE: Before any treatment begins with a chiropractor, you should first certainly qualify the doctor as having the necessary qualifications to do such a job. Now there are two ways of treating this. We can do it with instrument, which is a very advanced way of doing this, and after a comprehensive consultation to include a prior medical history and examination to include chiropractic, orthopedic, and neurological testing with range of motion and a palpation examination, then a set of x-rays to the cervical spine or neck area should be done to qualify the exact nature of how the adjustment or treatment should be done. If it is an instrument adjustment, as I said it is pretty advanced, this instrument literally taps the vertebrae back into alignment so there is no twisting, cracking, or popping. It sends an electronic current or a magnetic current to the spine and as you can see, it is a very gentle treatment that goes up the spine, tapping the vertebrae back into alignment and releasing the muscle tension. Once that is done, and that only takes minutes, it is very comfortable, and the patient is released. If you want manual adjusting and you should go to a chiropractor, that is the old way of doing it, you want to make sure that it is done very rapidly and very comfortably. It should not take any more than a couple of minutes and it should create just a little bit of a sting as those vertebrae are put back into alignment from stimulating the nerve endings.
