DR. WILLIAM A. LATORRE: Before any treatment begins with a chiropractor, you should certainly make sure that he is qualified and very well qualified. I prefer a chiropractic orthopedist or a chiropractic neurologist. Once you enter the doctor's office, it should be clean, comfortable, and very relaxing. After an intake form is filled out, you then ought to go through a complete history to include a prior medical history and occurrence of why you are having the problem, the symptoms that you are having and then the doctor begins his examination to include chiropractic, orthopedic, and neurological tests along with palpatory examination. Once that is completed, always, always, always be sure that the chiropractor takes a set of x-rays. You would not build a house without a set of blueprints and you do not treat the spine without an x-ray. Once that is done, instrument adjusting is probably the easiest and most effective and least painful for both patient and doctor. An adjusting tool is used. It goes up the spine, creating very little discomfort, tapping the vertebrae back into alignment, can be done very easily and painlessly to the patient while it stimulates all of the nerves within the posterior joints of the spine, sending very specific information to and from the brain for central integration. Central integration is how we are in the universe. We have to be centered, not twisted and tipped, but quite frankly centered. So, all of these things are accomplished with an adjusting instrument. Once the thoracic spine is adjusted, then the doctor should also check for rib head lesions, which can be very painful in the same area, adjusting it from the back as well as the front with an instrument. They should not take very long at all and it should also be very, very painless. Do not expect to get treated on the first day. Expect the doctor to do his evaluation and then put all of his findings together; your history, your examination, your x-rays, your symptoms and then the next day, once all of this is together, he now has in his mind a treatment plan to correct these problems.
