DR. F. FELICIA FERRARA: Hello, I'm Dr. Felicia, and I'm here to talk to you about how to treat headaches in your child. Now, childhood headaches are not uncommon, and kids become stressed over the very minor details that you and I might not think twice about. For instance, they might spill a glass of milk, and for that they might be very upset. They might miss a toy that some other kid has and that will make them very upset. What to remember is that children can't verbalize what they are feeling so therefore they don't know what's causing the stress but very often, they'll just say "Mommy, my head hurts." First thing, you want to be sure that there's no fever, and if that's the cause of the headache that's a different problem and you need to see a pediatrician. So by all means, check for a fever first, and then check and ask your child what it is that happened to them that day. Maybe they did something wrong at school, maybe they got an item wrong on a test, and that will cause a headache. When you're treating the headache, you want to put a nice moist cloth on the child's head, possibly keep them in a darkened room, nice and quiet and tranquil. Soft music will always help as well. So if your child comes home and complains of a headache, by all means, put them in a quiet place, darkened room, and allow them to rest for a few minutes and it may change. If the headache persists for many days, by all means, call the pediatrician. In the meantime, keep your home calm, quiet, and tranquil, and everyone will have less of a headache. God bless.
