PATTY BURROWS: How to read to your child. Reading to your child is a lot of fun, and it's very important in helping your child develop their own reading skills. One of the things that's very important when reading to your child is to make sure that you use a lot of expression. For example, I'm going to read a little blurb with expression and without expression. "There is a load of sugar going to the chocolate factory", his driver said, "We could take the sugar cars." Or how much better would it be for your child to listen and hear this, "There's a load of sugar going to the chocolate factory", his driver said; "We could take the sugar cars." Isn't that better? Make sure that you're child understands that reading is just like talking. We don't talk in a monotone and we don't read in a monotone. There's action in reading. Talk about the pictures. Ask, "What is happening in this picture? What do you think will happen next? What do you think would have happened if maybe something else happened?" Talk about the characters. "Which character do you like best? Or what character would you most like to be if you were in this book?" Talk about the events. Make sure the child knows every part of the book -- that they know that there's a cover, and they know that there's a front and a back, and that they also know that someone wrote that book. What I want you to do when you're reading to your child is be animated, read with expression, and have a lot of fun. Make it a family affair.
