DR. STEVE ARKIN: Hi. I'm Dr. Steve Arkin and I'll be demonstrating ultrasound today. Ultrasound has been a tool that obstetricians used as a window to the womb of the baby, and today we'll be using ultrasound on a pregnant woman to see how the baby is developing. Ultrasound has multiple uses. It can tell whether you have a single baby or twins, whether the baby is alive or dead, or whether the baby is developing properly. It could tell the position of the baby whether it's breached or what we call vertex, which is head first, and it can be used to determine a multitude of abnormalities. Some of these are known as hydrocephaly, which is water in the brain, and encephaly, which is actually missing part of the brainstem. Other conditions that are commonly seen are gastroschisis. It's a long word but it's when the bowel is actually outside of the baby's abdomen. There's another type of abdominal wall defect called omphalocele. These are the things we look for. We look at the amniotic fluid and we look for position of the afterbirth.
