BEA ROWELL: Hi, my name is Bea. I'm a midwife working at Labor Of Love Birth Center here in Tampa. We specialize in looking after ladies who are in low-risk pregnancies and looking for natural birthing choices, and I'm here today to talk to you about how to prepare yourself and your home for home birth. Now, your midwife is going to give you a list of supplies that she would like you to have around. They're mostly normal household items; things like bleach, alcohol for cleaning, a shower curtain for covering your mattress. Try and get this list of supplies ready by your 37th week. Any time after this, you can go into labor. When you're thinking about having your baby in the home, think about where you want to be, where you want to deliver. You should have adequate lighting, warmth and space for everybody to move around in. Another good thing to have in good supply is food and water and any drinks. This keeps everybody with energy and active and keeps everybody happy. Think about pets that you may have around in the house. If they're inquisitive, you may want to have them shut away in another area. Perhaps someone can take care of them. Also children, children need to have another care person around so they can look after them and maybe take them off somewhere else should they become anxious or a bit testy if they're tired. Think about covering areas that you're going to be birthing in. Have a good cover for your mattress and make sure your carpets and rugs are protected.
