DR. STEVE ARKIN: Hi, this is Dr. Steve Arkin. I'll be talking a little bit about how to use an ovulation calculator. Ovulation calculation is a way of trying to predict the day that the egg is released from the ovary using calculations. Typically, you start your very first day of the calculation as the first day of your last menstrual period as day one. Most women--then you want to count for your entire cycle. So let's say your cycle was 30 days, if you knew your cycle was 30 days from one period to the other, you subtract 14 days, which means you ovulated on day 16. If you had a 28-day cycle, you subtract 14, your ovulating in day 14. If you had a 32-day cycle, you subtract 14, which means you ovulated on day 18. So your typical ovulation calculator is really based on the length of your menstrual cycle from day one of your menstrual cycle to the next day one of your menstrual cycle. And to pick the day that you ovulate is 14 days backwards from the last day. That's how it's typically done. Sometimes it's done in conjunction with the test called BBT or basal body thermometer, where you take your temperature everyday. And if day 16, let's say, on a 30-day cycle was your ovulation, you would notice a rise in temperature which corresponds to the rise in progesterone levels.
