BEA ROWELL: Hi, my name is Bea. I'm a midwife here at Labor Of Love Birth Center. We serve ladies in Tampa and the surrounding areas who are in low-risk pregnancies and are looking for natural birthing choices. I'm here today to talk to you about how to push when you're in labor and near the birth. There are two options that you can try. One is a more natural method, which is just breathing through and letting the baby descend naturally. This often works if you've had a baby already and can be very nice because you're not using that much energy up. The other method is some real directed pushing which may be more useful to you if you're a first-time mom. Basically, what you're doing is taking a breath. You're taking a deep breath; you're holding it; and you're going to push right into your bottom area. You're going to use the same method of pushing as you do when you're constipated and desperate to have a poop. I know, we're going to keep reminding you about that when you're pushing. Okay. So we would try natural methods first. If the baby is not descending so well, then we're going to help you with some more directed pushing. Your midwife will talk you through it. She'll tell you when to take the breath; how to hold the breath; and how to bear down with it. It's important not to let that breath go because then you're letting that energy go that you need to push. You can be vocal but the vocalizing is using energy that you could be pushing with, so it's going to take you longer. Whichever way works for you, have a happy, healthy baby
