DR. F. FELICIA FERRARA: Hello! I'm Dr. Felicia, and I'm here to speak to you about how to select a backpack for your child going back to school. Now, the US National Safety Council puts out some tips about this. They ask you to look for padding on the shoulders, tying around the hips so that it can keep the backpack close to your child's back, separate compartments inside to balance out the items, and also tying around the hips so that it stays tight around the waist. Now, with that in mind, remember, don't lose sight of the psychological factor with the child, so that the child has a backpack that is age appropriate for them, attractive for them, and that they feel good about. Don't worry about picking out the backpack with your child, try to get to a store where you might get a good bargain on them. There are certainly pre-school sales where you can look for these bargains, and by all means make it a pleasurable event because your child will be carrying that backpack throughout the school year. It's very important that they feel comfortable with it both physically and psychologically. With that in mind, happy school hunting, and good day.
