JOETTA FINKLE: How to help your child with homework. Helping your child with homework is a right of passage almost every parent experiences. Here are some suggestions to help make the task an easier one. You will want to organize around a schedule or a plan, hopefully your student is blocking their assignments daily. You will want to take their assignment and estimate how long it might take to complete that task at home in the evening. You will want to grid a designated hour, at least every night, as your homework time. You will plan the other activities outside leisure activities around the homework as homework will be the number one priority. For long-range assignments, you will want to grid that time over several months, and make sure that the assignment is not forgotten and becomes an overnight hassle. You want to discuss all assignments enthusiastically with your child. A good suggestion for a homework that is unknown to either you or the child is to go on the internet. The internet is a fantastic learning tool and a great way to share time together when you work out that research. You want to check the student's homework from time to time so that they know that you checked and that you care, and you will want to begin the work as agreed, and that everyone knows that it starts at a certain time every evening. In short, please make sure that you have an organized schedule or plan, you have a designated work area with the necessary tools, and that you consider the stuff or assignment to be completed, and you estimate the time that it is going to take every evening.
