JOETTA FINKLE: How to create a good study environment. Student success begins with good study habits. You, as a parent, can assist your child by providing the tools necessary for completion of the homework, having a designated work area for the child, and then offer assistance periodically, so that they can complete the task at hand. You want to set expectations for your child, simply asking them to complete a homework every evening, ask them to be able to prepare to pass the exam, and to participate in classroom discussions. To meet that end, they have to be able to organize their materials and they would be putting the necessary paper, subject by subject, in a folder, so that at test time, the material is readily available for them to complete that final exam review. You want to provide a computer or laptop for your child if their homework requires research, and they maybe don't have access to that other material readily, so that the laptop can assist them in their research. You, as a parent, should be a role model to your child. You want to demonstrate to them that you read, that you take them to the library, that you help them with research, and that you are expressing enthusiasm over your own books that you read and activities that you participate in. In summary, create a good study environment by providing the materials necessary, having folders for them to organize the work, and check from time to time to see that they are completing the task at hand.
