JOETTA FINKLE: How to study with a child. One of the easiest and simple ways to study with your child is to have a designated study area. The second tip would be to provide the necessary materials for your child to accomplish the homework that he needs every evening. A third suggestion is to take and schedule a designated homework time period every evening, making homework a priority and scheduling all other extracurricular activities and leisure activities around the homework plan. You want to begin work as you agreed. You will be close by to offer assistance to your child should they have mannerisms that are starting to interfere with their homework progress. Make your child's homework something that you check periodically. You can reinforce the interest that you have in their work in that very, very simple manner. When a child accomplishes an assignment, make sure that you are there to reward them for work well done and it can be as simple as a sticker or an activity that they would like to earn that you reward them with at a later date. You can use mnemonic strategies to reinforce learning that they need to accomplish, such as the "every good boy does fine" mnemonic that we learned for music lines, when we were in school. Have a regular bedtime and again, simply provide the materials necessary, have a safe learning environment, and have a designated time every evening.
