JOETTA FINKLE: How to help your child study. We are going to give you some tips that will help reinforce the learning opportunities your child will have this year. One of the easiest ways is simply to make a commitment to study. Have them set a designated homework time every evening. You will want to have a plan and organize their work around their homework hour and their outside leisure activities. You will want to create a place for them to work and provide the necessary materials to do that. You want to divide all learning into short periods of time if a child has a problem with sustained attention. You may break up the learning time by offering stretching breaks or taking a small walk or even having a mini trampoline that they could jump on to lose some of that extra energy. You want to outline all learning into important points and you will want to review these at least two times to start to understand the relationships that are really being developed. You will want to maybe strengthen memory skills by having mnemonic techniques such as the "Every Good Boy Does Fine" that we learned for our music lines back in school. You want to review the main concepts, possibly 10 to 15 minutes every night, and then do it the next day and then a week later so that this will lock into their long-term memory and they will be successful passing their test. Have a regular bedtime for your child and do not forget to reinforce them for a work well done. You can provide an opportunity for them to earn a special activity. In short, provide the necessary materials, schedule at appropriate hour of work, and provide the area and the materials necessary for their success.
