PATTY BURROWS: How to teach your child colors. Color my world, what a wonderful phrase that is. Our world is all about color. Just think what life would be like if there was no color? In order to teach your child colors, you can be very, very creative, and there are many other things that you can teach when teaching colors, about sorting and those things as well, but we're just going to talk about colors right now. One of the things is you can make a sorting tray. These are Froot Loops, and you can have your child sort Froot Loops by color. I'm sure they would enjoy eating them afterwards. You can get color plates. Have your child put everything that's blue on the blue plate or everything that's orange on the orange plate. Don't forget the wonderful finger paint. Children love to finger paint. It's another kinesthetic way of learning. Have them to mix colors together. Always, you can group things by colors. You can group shapes, letters, numbers, anything that you can find. Categorize their clothes. Put their clothes in order according to color; put all the green shirts together; put all the red shirts together; put all the blue shoes together; put all the black shoes together; those kinds of things. Of course, you can always have flash cards that show color. You can sort them; you can match them. There are many, many, many things that you can do about color and about teaching color. The important things to remember are: make sure that you point out color to your child on a regular basis; make sure that they associate those colors with special things; always talk to your child when describing an object; always describe the color of the object as well. That's very important.
