PATTY BURROWS: How to teach your child time management. Management of time is one of the secrets of success. It's never too early to start teaching your child time management. Make sure that your child is aware of how much time it takes to perform a task. Watch your child as they play. Watch your child as they dress. Find out how much time it takes them to do things. One of the things that you may want to do is you may want to have a stop watch. Time them to see how long it takes them to put on their shoes, how long does it take them to brush their teeth, and then you can sit down with them and talk about making a plan, making sure that they have enough time to complete all of the tasks that they need. Another thing is to create a calendar of some kind. We've created here a list of chores, which is one of the best ways to start with very young children. Since they don't have a concept, basically, of a calendar, it's easy for them to understand the days of the week as it relates to their chores. So remember, whenever you're teaching your child time management, use all the little tricks that you can think of so that your child will be aware of the time they spend doing things. Set a good example for your child by managing your time wisely as well.
