PATTY BURROWS: How to tutor a teen: choose a well lit location with very few distractions; have all of your materials readily available; make sure that you review your agenda with your student whenever you're working with them. Sometimes it's important for the student to come to you with their ideas. Teens like to feel in charge. And so if you let them come to you with ideas, it gives them a little bit of power. Encourage and praise the teen during the session. Get feedback often. You make the final decision about what happens in a tutoring session based on what is in the best interest of the child. You will want to review. You will want to ask questions and make sure you're asking questions that require some kind of a response rather than yes or no to make sure the child is understanding.
