CINDY MASTRY: As we get older, our bones get a little more brittle, our hips get a little tighter, and we might find ourselves with a pain in the back, maybe even a pain in the neck, [SOUNDS LIKE] Hatha Yoga can really help that, so after you've checked with your doctor, you want to make sure you let your teacher know of any problems you might have, any issues. And a chair yoga class is a really good place to start, so any poses can be adapted to the chair. For instance, the Warrior Two pose, all done in a chair, but it can tone your arms. It can tone your legs. I'm not at risk for falling because I have a chair here to help me. Another example of this would be the twist pose. Using the chair, you don't have to worry about getting up or off the ground, because you're already there, and you can still come in to the Twist pose. So remember, as with any other type of yoga, you want to honor your body. Make sure what you're doing does not go too far, and you're not competing with anybody else. Listen to your inner voice and do what works for you. A chair yoga class is a great place to start, because it can allow you to strengthen your bones without being at risk of falling.
