JAY GOLDEN: How to chip. Chipping seems to be a lost shot in the game of golf. One of the easiest shots in golf. They were using it 500 years ago. I was not personally there but that is the rumor and it has been used, used, used, used until 10, 15 years ago when they came out with a 60 degree wedge and everyone is using 60 degree wedges when they are this far off the green instead of an easy chip shot. I have a seven iron here and chip and run, one hand, the other hand, no hands. I mean, it really is so much easier to hit that shot than to hit a wedge shot and you are looking and you have to hit it perfectly and if you hit heavy it is shorter to green, if you skull it it is over the green, the chip and run is a shot that you should learn. The grip that you use, it could be a putting grip; it could be your normal overlap or interlock grip. It is more of a putting stroke than it is a swing. It really--I do not want to say it is easy because there are no easy shots in golf but I will say this, it is a lot easier than hitting a 60 degree wedge or a sand wedge. I am basically in my putting stance, putting stroke and that is it, even though I am rolling this on the grass, grass and then on the green. Sometimes you have an elevated green and you think "Oh I have to hit that perfect wedge up here," chip and run, chip, chip, chip, chip, chip, chip. It takes some practice to get the feel but a chip and run is the shot. It truly is one of the easiest shots in golf and it is one that somehow has disappeared. Take a seven iron, feel like you are putting, hit a chip and run and you are going to improve your scores.
