STEVE ARKIN, MD: Hi! I'm Dr. Arkin and I'm an OB-GYN doctor. I have delivered many babies in the Tampa Bay area. Delivering a baby requires several steps. First, the woman will be in labor and they labor for various periods of times; some quick and some not so quick. Once they get completely dilated, which is 10 cm, they begin to push and the head will start to crown. Crowning means you will actually see the head when you look and it will actually spread the labia apart. After the head crowns and the head comes out, the shoulder are still in, so you put some gentle traction on the head to release the anterior, which is the top shoulder and then the bottom shoulder. Once the head and shoulders are out, you suction the nose and mouth, you deliver the rest of the baby, you clamp and cut the cord, collect some cord blood, and deliver the placenta. That's kind of a summary of how you deliver a baby.
