JULIO RIVERA: Hi, my name is Julio Rivera. I am the head instructor and manager here at Premier Martial Arts in New York City. In this clip, we are going to talk about a move that is illegal in judo, and that is attacking the spine or doing a spine lock. All attacks to the spine are illegal in judo because they are extremely dangerous. For example, take my opponent and I throw. Right away he turtles up. So from here I am going to pull, I am going to go for a choke from here. I get my hooks in, I come down. I stretch my opponent out and I go for the choke. Now, so far I am okay. I am in a legal territory. Where it gets sketchy is when I arch this way and extend his back, very, very dangerous for the spine. As a matter of fact, recently a guy got seriously hurt this way. That is going to bend his spine back and it is extremely dangerous.
