JULIO RIVERA: Hi, my name is Julio Rivera. I am the head instructor and manager here at Premier Martial Arts in New York City. In this clip, we are talking about a technique that is illegal in judo and that is the wrist lock. The wristlock did originate with Japanese jiu-jitsu, which is the forefather of judo, but it is illegal in judo competition. In judo you grab here. So as I am grabbing my opponent, it would be illegal for me to grab and go into a lock from here. Although armbars are legal, arm locks are legal, I can grab this, small joint locks are not. The reason being, that if we are in competition and I throw my opponent from here, I can go back and lock him here and he is going to be safe, okay? I can go slowly and that is fine. But with the wristlock, I have to really--because he can resist that wristlock, I have to really snap it on. So for it to be effective and I snap it on, there is no time for my partner to tap. It is instant and the wrist will break. For self defense, wristlocks are awesome, but for judo competition they're, illegal. Remember, your partner is your main concern when you are practicing. In judo competition, stay away from wristlocks. They are absolutely illegal in competition.
