RICARDO BELLOT: Hi, my name is Ricardo Bellot. I'm an instructor here at Premier Martial Arts here in New York City midtown. In this clip, we're going to talk about how to do karate. Karate is an ancient form that originated in Okinawa and later spread to Japan and throughout the rest of the world. Karate consists of using the total body as a weapon. Now, when using karate, you have finger strikes when you strike the eyes. You have chops; you strike the neck, the collarbone. Whole fist, you strike the nose, the body. You also have palm strikes; you strike the nose, and clap the ears. Also we use elbows and integrate elbows into karate as well. Karate is very limited in kicks but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist. You have front kicks, the basic kicks. You have your side kicks. When executing, karate is very good for self-defense, men, women, children, any built, any size. Now, when using karate, a lot of people can use karate to get their selves in shape, for good cardiovascular activity and strength training. But the fact of the matter is, karate in its true form, is a combat art, okay? Now, again, so if I'm using karate, karate's good for self-defense. It's not about power, it's not about strength. It's about technique and accuracy. So if this guy, he's overpowering me. He comes in; I can easily come in, strike, boom, strike, and strike. And that's how you do karate.
