JAY GOLDEN: Have you ever hit into a green side bunker? Or just once when you are going for a par 5 and 2 and you are 3 wood winning? Green side bunkers are very important to know how to hit them and hit out of them well. And you've see the pros on TV they say, "Oh, I would rather be in a bunker than in a high grass around the green." It is so true. And there are just a few fundamentals to being a decent bunker player. To be a great one takes a lot of practice but just to be good. And number one you have to realize the club does not hit the ball, the club hits the sand and the sand hits the ball. Fundamental number one, the sand hits the ball. How much sand do you have to hit, to hit the ball a certain distance? You learn that from practice. But number one, you want to hit the sand, how much sand? In general, this far behind the ball. Another fundamental is that you want to start out with your sand wedge facing the sky, open up to the sky. To do that you have to aim to the left, aim left, open the clubface and then hit that far behind the ball. In order to hit that far behind the ball, I like to start with my club that far behind the ball so I could look at the exact spot that I want to hit. Look at that exact spot. Look at that exact spot I want to hit. A great way to practice that is to draw a line and try to hit that line. Pretty good. Little behind, but pretty good. Little behind but pretty good. That was good. That was good. And that is the trick, aim left, open the clubface and hit your spot. And if you do, you are going to be a good sand player. To be a very good or great sand player, spend a lot of time in the beach.
