JAY GOLDEN: How to hit short irons. Short irons are considered scoring clubs compared to middle irons, long irons, hybrids, fairway woods. If you could hit a short iron close to the hole, have a chance for a birdie, hit it on the green, have a two putt par, tremendous advantage if you could hit good short irons. Usually you will have a short iron after hitting a long drive so you do not want to waste that drive. The number one fundamental with short irons is taking a divot after you hit the ball. Naturally, you want to have a full swing, you want to have an accelerating swing; you want to have a correct swing. However, if you could hit the ball and then hit the ground it does two things, number one it ensures solid contact and number two it put some backspin on the ball. What do you do to make it more likely to take divot after hitting the ball? Number one, you play the ball towards the center or even to the right of center in your stance. Number two, you put your hands in front of the ball. If we take a look at the top of this grip, it is slightly in front of or to the left of the ball. What that does is put the bottom of your swing in front of the ball which makes it more likely to take a divot. Number three, when you swing you certainly do not want to scoop the ball in order to hit down or take a divot in front of the ball. If you have difficulty with that you should have what I would call divot awareness. Actually feel, think and almost see with your peripheral vision that you are going to take a divot after hitting the ball. It is very important to take a divot on short irons. Start with the ball a little further back in your stance, keep your hands a little more in front of the ball and have divot awareness and you can start hitting some of your best short irons.
