PANCHO HERRERA: This is Pancho Herrera. Basic mountain bike safety involves a number of topics. Number one, let's make sure our equipment is well prepared and well maintained. We want to make sure there is air in the tires. All right, there is air in the tires. The brakes have been tested and the shifting system is set up accurately. Secondly, let's make sure that the headsets tight, check the brakes, check the headset, bottom brackets got no lateral play and that the quick releases on the wheels are firmly installed. Secondly, we've got our personal safety equipment, gloves, helmet, safety glasses, all important elements. And lastly, let's make sure we share the trails with respect for other trail users. Equestrians and hikers can be encountered at any turn, so let's make sure we are ready for those guys that are also using these great trails. Another element of mountain biking safety is your choice of terrain to ride on. Make sure you choose a trail ride that is within your skill levels and within your abilities. You can check with your local bike shop. They will know where to point you for your given skill level. And of course, if you encounter something that looks too tough, don't hesitate to get off and walk.
