JAY GOLDEN: The Modern putting stroke. For many years, putting was with wrists. Wrist putting, wrists, wrists, wrists, all wrists. Billy Casper, one of the great wrist putters. Arnold Palmer, one of the great wrist putters. For 500 years, it was wrists. Then it was wrists with arms. Wrists and arms, wrists and arms. Then it graduated to all arms. In the 1960s, there were 2 great putters, George Archer and Bob Charles, both of them no wrists. They brought in the new no-wrist method and it's still used today. If you watch the players on any of the tours, LPGA, PGA, the Champions' tour, some of the older guys still use some wrist. PGA tour, LPGA tour, watch these wrists, nothing, nothing. Arms, shoulders, they talk about rocking the shoulders. If you were going to invent a putting method, would you get something that look like this? Or something that you would flip in there? Then you have to time the flip. So, all arms and shoulders, no wrists. All arms and shoulders, no wrists. All arms and shoulders, no wrists. And that's the modern putting stroke. Work on it. A good drill is to actually watch your hands while you're putting. Don't look at the ball, watch your hands. And if you see your hands flip, if you see more of an angle than with the way you started, you used your wrists, and that is not the modern putting stroke. No wrists. Practice it like crazy to get the feel, and you will be a better putter.
