WOMAN: How to teach a toddler number recognition? Begin by teaching your child number recognition at a very early age. You can begin by counting fingers and counting toes. Make sure you play all little counting games like singing counting songs, "One, little two, little three, little Indians". How about "One, two buckle my shoe?" Don't forget that everything you do, you can count just about everything. Count pieces of food. For instance, you may want to put grapes on your child's tray and you can count those grapes. Make sure that you count, "One, two, three." Also, you may want to count other objects in your house. You have crayons, you count crayons. You have toys, you can count toys. Later on, you may want to make your child their very own counting book and this book is made by just making a number representation and putting Velcro. So you can see that we have six frogs, two of the frogs are missing, but we can put them on with Velcro. Later, you want to make a dot to dot picture or representation of the numeral that represents the quantity. So just remember, when teaching your child to recognize numbers, you need to be consistent and you need to count everything everyday.
