DR. MARK ADDICKES: Hi, I'm going to talk to you about MCL injuries. The MCL is the most common ligament injury in the knee. And the MCL or medial collateral ligament, it runs right here on the inside of the knee. And any time you have a stress from the outside of the knee, you can either strain or completely tear that ligament. The wonderful thing for the patient is that the MCL is a ligament that heals very, very well and very reliably on its own. It's not something that requires surgery. The bad thing is that it hurts like heck. And so if you do sprain your MCL, it's really important to get into physical therapy or you can end up with a really stiff knee. The MCL as you can see right here on the medial side of the knee and on the MRI you can also see it on the medial side of the knee which runs right over here on the MRI. The only way to avoid an MCL injury is to stay on the couch. So the bottom line is just be careful and hopefully you won't have to see a doctor for an MCL injury.
