DR. CHRIS MANGO: Hi. This is Dr. Chris Mango, here in New York City. On behalf of Expert Village, we're going to be taking a look at trigger points today. The next muscle we're going to be looking at is the quadratus lumborum. It's more commonly known as the QLs to most people. This muscle is the major supporter of the lower back. This muscle runs on either side of the spine and up, and inserts in some of the bottom ribs on either side. It also runs at an angle and attaches along the hips, along the iliac crest. There are quite a few trigger points. They're broken up into deep and superficial. I'll show you how to find these, both these sets of trigger points. Now let's take a look and I'll show you how to find the different trigger points in this muscle. Okay, as I said before, there are two sets of trigger points here. You have ones that are superficial or on the surface, and then you have ones that are deep. Let's first take a look at the superficial ones. They're going to be along either side of the spine, just on the top, right in the low back area. You can do these both at the same time on both sides. Just hold as we did before, have the patient breathe. When they no longer feel the pain, push in a little harder. Now, to get to the deeper ones, what you want to do is you want to bring your thumbs and you want to come out, and after you feel that first group of muscles kind of dip down, then you know you're into the deep area. So what you want to do now is push in and underneath. Let's move on to the next trigger point in the area.
