DR. CORAL ARVON: Hi, my name is Dr. Coral Arvon. I am a licensed clinical psychotherapist with Arvon & Associates in Counseling in Aventura, Florida. This is the beginner's guide to meditating. The first thing you want to do is find a quiet place. Sit down so your feet planted on the floor to feel the earth, try this: close your eyes and start to breathe, listen to the sounds around you. If you're inside, you can either listen to the air-conditioning; if you're outside, maybe the ocean. And a basic way to start would be to close your eyes, listen to the sounds of the background. If you want music, you can have music, or you can have it without. And if any thoughts come into your mind, just let them be, acknowledge them and let them go again. Just calm down and get in touch with your breathing and meditate, and this will relax you. And the more that you practice, the better it is. There are other ways to meditate. You could go walk, and it could be a meditative walk, or you can take a yoga class or a martial arts class. Meditation means many things to different people. The important part about meditation is that you slow down. You get rid of your stress. You focus in your breathing: breathing in, breathing out. Some people have a mantra; other people like going to the top of a mountain; wherever you want to go. Some people go into their closets and light candles and have their own little sanctuary. You just want to make sure that your environment is calm and comfortable and a good place for you. Five things to remember about meditating: find a comfortable place; put your feet on the ground so that you feel that you're in touch with the earth; breathe, breathe in, breathe out. You can do this on the beach or you can do this in your home but find a good location. And the fifth way, the fifth thing to remember is that meditating will change your life.
