JACKIE SILVER: I'm Jackie Silver with how to remove whiteheads. What exactly is going on with our skin when we see whiteheads? Every pore creates oil called sebum which lubricates and moisturizes our skin. If our pores become blocked, the sebum will collect in the pore causing blemishes. If the pore stays open, a blackhead can appear, but if it closes, the bacteria inside the pore starts to grow and causes the whitehead. It's important not to squeeze them with your bare fingers because that can open up the opportunity for infection. The best advice for dealing with whiteheads is to see your doctor, but if you want to remove them at home, there is a tool available to do just that. It's a stainless steel tool called the comedone remover that you can buy at most beauty supply stores. It has a loop on one end which is the part you'll use to remove the whitehead. You should always sterilize the tool before using it. Boiling it in a pot of water for a few minutes can sterilize it. Do not boil it in a microwave since it's made of metal. Steam your face first by applying hot-wet wash cloths to it to loosen the impurities. Take the loop end of the comedone remover and press it over the whitehead to release the impurities. If it's not ready to be cleaned up, don't try to force it or you may injure yourself or scar. Once the impurities have been removed, wash your face again with warm water and mild soap or antibacterial wash. Remember not to squeeze whiteheads with your fingers. Doing that can lead to infection and scarring.
