RACHAEL RICHARDSON: Hi, I'm Rachael Richardson and I'm a registered dietician and a licensed nutritionist. I'm from Nutrolution, Inc., and we are located in Miami, Florida. This is the beginner's guide to taking vitamins. Now, this is a very big topic taking vitamins and I do suggest that you start off with an evaluation to find out which are the best vitamins for you. However, if you do want to jump into it yourself, then I suggest starting with a multivitamin. So some of the key factors that you want to look at when you're assessing a multivitamin are: number one, that, ideally, it would be in a capsule or a powder or a liquid form and not a tablet form, and the reason is, is that tablets are harder for us to digest and there's not as much surface area for us to really pick up those nutrients and absorb them into our bodies. Another factor that's very important is that you make sure that the nutrients that are in that multivitamin are bioavailable forms of that vitamin. So there's a lot of different nutrients and each one has different forms that it comes in, and there's forms that are, in some cases, even harmful. There are some forms that are negligible to our bodies and then there are some forms that are highly bioavailable and our going to help us. So that is the most important thing. The five things to remember are: start with a multivitamin, make sure the multivitamin has bioavailable forms of the nutrients, make sure there are no artificial colors or flavors in the multivitamin, make sure that there are minerals in your vitamin and start with probiotics.
