Hi, I'm Patrick Eaves. Today, we're going to talk a little bit about how to go backwards on your inline skates. Now for most of you who are just beginning and I don't recommend going backwards right away, really what you want to do is get focused on your forward, your forward glide and your stopping maneuvers. But once you have those down, you are going to want to learn to go backwards. Now the reasons for going backwards, obviously, if you're going to get into aggressive skating and you want to do tricks, you're going to be transitioning in and out a lot of your backwards skate. Now, to start out your backward skate, one of the most important things you're going to do in the beginning is remember to look behind you as you skate. You've got to look where you're going when you're doing backward skating. Start your toes together. Then you're going to push out on your toes, and then you're going to pull in on your heels once your legs go out. Toes are going to start in together, push out with your toes and come in with your heels. Once you start getting into that motion, you'll be able to go backwards. [demonstration] All right, great. So good luck with backward skating. Remember, contact a local inline skate instructor or hockey coach, make sure they can help you learn how to inline skate backwards safely.
