Other common signs of teething are: swollen, shiny, red gums and you might feel a little bit of bump underneath the gum. This is really, truly the only reliable sign of teething. Some of the other symptoms we see could be teething symptoms or could potentially be something else and those include biting on everything that the baby sees. Starting around three months or so babies are able to kind of get their hands into their mouth and they start chewing on that. As they get older, closer around six months, they can intentionally grasp items and bring it to their mouth, and they do this with anything that they get their hands on really, and that's not so much a sign of teething necessarily as it is a developmental way that babies learn. Babies are tactile learners and they learn by mouthing things. That's how they learn about what it is. The other symptom that you might see is fussiness or irritability and that's because the baby?s teeth are working their way up into the gums, it puts pressure on their gums and that can be really uncomfortable for them. So some of the things that you might see is that they don't go down for naps as easily as they used to. They might refuse to eat or they might eat less than they were eating before. If you see any of these signs lasting longer than three days you might want to give your pediatrician a call. Other symptoms that have been sometimes associated with teething are a runny nose and sometimes a low grade fever. Again, if you see these symptoms for more than three days it's probably not teething and you might want to give your pediatrician a call.
