Robert Linde, Acupuncture Physician and Registered Herbalist, has studied herbs since 1975 and practiced Traditional Chinese Medicine for over 6 years.
In this segment we're going to try to demonstrate some techniques of Tui Na Massage which is a unique type of massage, which is a part of traditional Chinese medicine. These techniques can be used for a variety of ailments but in this case, we're going to be working on back pain. So one technique is called One Finger Pushing. There's a number of different ways that we can do this, but it's oftentimes on acupuncture points it requires a little bit of focus and concentration as we generate the pressure, the vibration and actually the energy through ourselves into the points. I'm not sure how well it shows up on camera. So that's One Finger Pushing. We can also do what's called Grasping. This is lifting up on the skin to increase the chi and blood flow and is somewhat similar to what we are doing with the cupping earlier in another segment. We also have a technique that's somewhat unique to Chinese medicine, which is called Rolling. And this oftentimes, if I do it right, feels very similar to a ball being rolled on his back. It is very nice for long muscles to get them to come out of spasms oftentimes. Then we oftentimes will try to relax the joints and use some pulling techniques to increase the flow of energy along in the meridians. So these techniques can be unique to Chinese medicine or similar to Western medicine or sometimes we're just massaging a muscle or an area to cause some relaxation. So hopefully this will help with some of Johnny's back pain as we get these muscles to relax and start to get some progress on this pain.
