Gymnastics can be a lot of fun especially at the advanced level but don't forget to use what you have learned up to this point. That is when injuries start to happen. Watch this free video clip on the importance of using the basics in advanced gymnastics.

Hi. My name's Jordan Dahl. We're talking about advanced floor gymnastics. And the next thing I wanted to talk about was not skipping the basics. Just because you're an advanced tumbler now does not mean that you can skip the basics. Let's recap some of what those are. Just a basic warm up drill -- the jogging around the floor a couple of times, the arm circle pops, the toe hops, the lunges. It's really getting every part of your body nice and warmed up. And then your stretches, your basic stretches -- getting your arms stretched out, your legs, especially, and really focusing on your ankles and your wrists, because that's where most injuries tend to occur. This is something that our coach really nailed into us as we were training, especially as competition season came 'round. I know you can start to get a little confident -- maybe too confident as you become more advanced. You need to keep in mind that being advanced does not mean forgetting all of the basics. Let's just recap our basic positions. The biggest one, of course, is your head. Remembering to pay attention to where your head is on your different skills, like it's going to be different on your back hand spring as it would be on your back tuck and getting that combination under your control. The next biggest important position would be your hand positions, making sure that those aren't turning out or going off your fingertips. It can be really dangerous and cause some really big serious injuries. And after that, it's really just more of the things that your coaches may nitpick at you about -- your legs being tight together, your arms being straight up where they need to be and is your body looking nice and straight and tight.
