One thing to also consider when your out day hiking is the fact that the weather may change on you. So you want to make sure you're up to date what the weather is going to do and as we all know the weather can be very unpredictable. You want to make sure that you take some sort of rain protection. If the weather is predicting any sort of rain possibility what so ever. A couple of different options, one of which is a poncho that will actually cover you and your pack, and it will keep you dry from your head all the way down below your knees. Another option that you can consider would be a rain jacket rain pant combination and those comes in waterproof, breathable format which basically is a membrane or a coating that goes on the inside of the jacket, inside of the pants and the pores in the coating are very, very microscopic and what they do is when you perspire your perspiration comes in the form of water vapor. A water vapor molecule is smaller than a H2O or water molecule. So your sweat, your perspiration actually will pass through the material and go into the outer jacket where it will evaporate. However if its raining the water molecule is to large to pass through it so you stay dry. Your perspiration goes through and water doesn't come in and that's very beneficial in keeping you dry in either warm or cool which ever happens to be the case.
