Hi! I'm Dr. Eric Sayer from Sayer Family Chiropractic. I'm here on behalf of Expert Village. In this video, we're going to be talking about to treat a strained back using what we call the RICE acronym. RICE stands for rest ice compression elevation. Pretty common with most strains. Rest, of course would be whatever caused it, don't do it. Try to cut back on activity. Let the part that has bothered you or hurt, let it rest and recuperate. With a low back, no more shoveling snow or whatever it may be. Ice. Ice is very simple. Ice packs, a bag a frozen peas. Put it on the injured area. Leave it on for about 20 minutes, no longer than 20 minutes, and then take it off for at least an hour before you put it back on again. With the C portion of RICE will be compression with the low back or with the back strain. Not as common, but it would just be one of those things just to relax. Elevation, same thing. Not as common with the low back. It just means we would like the person to be more relaxed than anything. RICE is more of an acronym for lots of other types of strained with muscles. With a low back, the most important thing is to rest it and ice it.
