Jojoba oil comes from the bean of a desert shrub. The bean is about 50 percent oil, making the non-fragrant liquid easy to extract. Jojoba is bacteria-resistant, hydrating and naturally aids absorption of substances into skin and nails. Combining the oils of jojoba, lemon and sweet almond makes a nourishing treatment for brittle nails and dry nail beds.
Vitamin E is a super-antioxidant prized for its ability to heal and protect skin. Buying vitamin E capsules usually is cheaper than buying the bottled oil, and it’s easy to extract the oil from the capsules. Another way to treat fingernails with vitamin E is topical application of foods naturally rich in the nutrient. Try slathering a little peanut butter or avocado on nails, or soaking fingertips in a shallow bath of tomato sauce, paste or puree.
Jojoba oil’s absorbent properties make it a great blend with moisturizing and antifungal vitamin E for nail health. Vitamin E cream or oil blends well with jojoba oil. The oil of various seeds and nuts that contain high concentrations of vitamin E can also be blended in for variety according to your tastes: sunflower seeds, Brazil nuts, pine nuts, hazelnuts, almonds and peanuts. After the concoctions have been applied and the excess wiped off, your nails will be left with a nice luster.
Before applying any nail treatment, always remove any polish, wash and dry your hands and trim your nails. Leave fingers, especially the nail areas, damp to aid in absorption of treatment products. Gently massage oil or cream into nails and nail beds. Let hands sit for a while to absorb, or slip on white cotton gloves or manicure gloves. A good time for nail treatments is before going to bed, as treatments will have time to absorb undisturbed overnight.
