LIVESTRONG.COM: What was your life like before joining LIVESTRONG.COM?
Before I joined LIVESTRONG.COM, I had already lost a bit of weight — about 50 or 60 pounds. My overall health wasn’t that great because, although I was losing weight, I was still eating a lot of bad food. I only recently started using LIVESTRONG.COM for recipes. I initially used it for exercise and health tips. What was your inspiration for making a change?
I was actually looking at the HealthKit app on my phone and thinking how I never use it. Then I just realized I’d gotten so big that I should really do something about it, and this seemed like it would be a useful way for me to track my weight loss. So that’s how I started using the app.
How did LIVESTRONG.COM help you lose weight?
By using LIVESTRONG.COM’s fitness and exercise tips along with some of the recipes, it helped me reach my goals. I have used MyPlate, but I constantly change out my calorie app. It took me a little over a year to get to where I am now, but I still have probably another six to 12 months to go.
What was your support system like?
My friends and family have encouraged me throughout my journey.
What’s your favorite way to work out?
I have not started running yet, but maybe I will later this year. I ride my bike about two to three days a week. I also walk quite often — every day if I can, and usually with my mom.
What’s your weekly exercise schedule?
As I said before, I bike ride and walk. Then on Tuesdays and Thursdays I like to do body-weight exercises.
What’s a typical day of meals and snacks?
I typically eat three to four meals in a day. As for snacks, I only eat them if I need extra calories for working out.
What’s the range of calories you eat per day?
I started at about 3,500 calories a day. Now I’m down to 2,070.
What are the healthy staples that are always in your kitchen?
Brown rice is a favorite, as well as bananas, strawberries, apples and peanut butter. I don’t usually keep a lot of staples around because I always like to find new recipes and use different ingredients. My diet consists of fruits, veggies, low-sugar foods and minimal carbohydrates.
How do you strategize for meals?
I do try to plan meals in advance, but most of the time I just wing it. It really depends on what I feel like at the time.
Were there any supplements that you took during your journey?
The only thing I take is a daily multivitamin. And I have recently started using protein powder to make shakes.
What’s the biggest challenge you faced?
Having patience. You have to accept that progress takes time.
What’s your biggest secret to success that you want to share with others?
Counting calories is number one! Other than that, drink a lot of water, make sure you pay attention to your weight closely and have patience and never quit.
What’s your life like now?
I am much happier now and have way more energy. And I’m more fit than I have ever been and eating better too.
